Toss all the ingredients into a slow cooker. Set it to low and let it cook for 8-10 hours. Stir every now and then until the applesauce takes on a deep golden color.

Spoon the hot mixture into a blender or use an immersion blender. Blend it until it's nice and smooth, but be super cautious as it’s very hot. Check your blender's manual for tips on blending hot stuff safely.

Pour the blended mix back into the slow cooker. Put the lid on but leave it cracked open so the steam can vent. Turn it to high and let it cook for 2-3 more hours, stirring occasionally, until it's darker and thickened.

If using the canning method, spoon the hot apple butter into clean, hot jars and process them in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes (adjust based on altitude). If skipping canning, let the mixture cool completely, then transfer it to clean jars and keep in the fridge.
